Instructions for the CDM MRC Training

Training Date
The training will be available to start from June 22nd-26th, 2009.  During those dates you will be able to go onto SL and take the training when it is most convenient for you.  We would greatly appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete a pre-test prior to taking the training, a post-test afterwards, and complete an evaluation form.  Instructions for completing the pre-test, post-test and evaluation are below.

Getting Started: Creating a Second Life Account, Avatar, and Second Life Download

1.  Go to http://secondlife.com/
2.  On the upper right-hand corner of the page you will see an orange arrow that says Get Started - Free Download.   Click on that.
3.   The first step will be to create an account: 

• Click on a starting look.  This will be your avatar - what you will look like in Second Life. 
• Choosing a community is optional.  If you choose a community you will be given fun places to explore. 
• Make up a first name or use your own.
• Choose a last name - they give you several options, and the options change periodically.
• Enter your email address, country, date of birth, real name, gender, password, etc.
• Once you accept the terms of service you can click Create an Account.
• You will then be asked to check your email.  You will receive a welcome email from noreply@secondlife.com.  In the email you will be directed to activate your account by clicking on a link.

4.    You will then be taken to the Download and Install site.  Follow the instructions on how to install the Second Life Viewer.  Some of you may have difficulty with the system requirements at this time, but it may still be possible to enter Second Life.

It is very possible that some of you may not be able to access SL at all, so if you cannot continue with the training because of technical difficulties, we would still like for you to fill out an evaluation where you can indicate what your difficulties were. 

Entering the Training Site
Once you have logged into Second Life, click on Map at the bottom of your screen.  A map of the Second Life world will appear.  To the right of the map you will see a little yellow arrow pointing to a box next to the word, Search.  This is telling you where you are in Second Life.  Inside the box type UNM and then click on Search.

You will then see the UNM island.  The coordinates are 102, 106, 24.  Under Search Results on the right side of the screen you will see Teleport.  When you click on Teleport you will then be taken to the UNM island.  When you arrive you should see a sign to the Center for Disaster Medicine MRC Training Site.  Follow the path to the training site.  Once you enter the building just follow the instructions you are given at the Welcome Center.
